Members of the Babylon Town Board are to mail an American flag to a California university where the student council voted last week to ban its display in its lobby, along with any other national flags.

"In my time serving the country that I love, the American flag has represented the true sacrifices made every day by the uniformed men and women who defend our freedoms," Babylon Town Councilwoman Jackie Gordon, a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserves who has been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, said in a statement released by the town.

Babylon Town Councilman Tom Donnelly recently welcomed TD Bank to the Town of Babylon as they held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the opening of their new location on Deer Park Avenue in Deer Park. Councilman Donnelly presented representatives from TD Bank with a Certificate of Special Recognition from the Town Board and congratulated them on the successful opening of their new location. Also in attendance for the event were Presiding Officer of the Suffolk County Legislature DuWayne Gregory and New York State Assemblyman Andrew Raia.

When Army Spc. Sean LaPersonerie was deployed to Iraq, his mother Marie worried about his well-being. When he returned to his Copiague home 14 months later, the concerns multiplied.

"He was emotional, angry, breaking things," she said. "We didn't know what to do with him." She feared he was suicidal. "I would check the garage to see if he was hanging in there," she said.

Sean was suffering from the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, his mother says, but he refused to seek assistance, and his family watched as his behavior spiraled out of control. Now, Marie LaPersonerie is working with Babylon Town to help others struggling with a loved one with PTSD.

Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Councilman Tom Donnelly to honor Officer Avital Donnenfeld of the Suffolk County Police Department’s First Precinct for receiving the 2014 Top Cop Award from the Knights of Columbus Our Lady of the Rosary Council No. 4428. The honor of being named Top Cop is awarded every year by the Our Lady of Rosary Council to a member of local law enforcement who has displayed exceptional professionalism and is dedicated to the safety of the local community.
